India Cooke & Cloud Shepherd with Solace Trio

When: Sat., March 24, 8 p.m. 2012

Besides her own Grammy-nominated work as a leader, violinist/composer India Cooke has one of those sick résumés that includes such bullet points as recording with Sun Ra, as well as live dates with everyone from Pharaoh Sanders, Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and Stevie Wonder.  Yet recently she's been heard in the company of Cloud Shepherd, an all-improv ambient quartet composed of percussionist Mark Pino and three Bay Area instrumentalists: Andrew Joron on theremin, Brian Lucas on bass and effects, and Joseph Noble on reeds and flutes.  "I first heard Cloud Shepherd at one of Bill Crossman's First Fridays," India recalled.  "Following that we got together to share musical ideas and hit it off brilliantly."  As for Cloud Shepherd, the group is still pinching itself.  "She's played with our inspirations, and she's one of inspirations," Brian said admiringly.  "To share the same sound environment is eerie, yet has a cosmic logic to it." At Swarm Gallery (560 2nd St., Oakland), Saturday, Mar. 24, 8 p.m., $10, SwarmGallery.com

Price: $10
