It only happened once before, but was such a success that on Friday, July 18, three of the Bay Area's finest steel guitarists will again meet on one stage at the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley) for "In the Steel of the Night." It's that rare chance to hear the electrified pedal-steel and lap-steel guitars as lead instruments, not just accompanists. Although he's not that old, Bobby Black (Commander Cody, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and many other bands) is the inspiration for most of today's local country and rock steel players, and was recently inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. From a younger generation but steeped in a different tradition, David Phillips is featured in the fun polka band, Big Lou's Polka Casserole. The Seducers is led by Joe Goldmark, whoserockin' CDs run the gamut from steel treatments of Hank Williams to the Beatles. (Think of him as the one-man Ventures of the steel world.) 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50. FreightandSalvage.org or 510-548-1761.
