In Spite of Everything

When: Sat., June 28, 8 p.m. and Sun., June 29, 4 p.m. 2008

The Suicide Kings' exploration of a Columbine-style school shooting, In Spite of Everything is a resonant patchwork of first-person narratives, with the spoken-word trio playing themselves and other characters. Geoff Trenchard, Rupert Estanislao, and Jamie DeWolf construct a chillingly plausible scenario in which the three lead a poetry workshop at a public school only to find themselves under harsh scrutiny when one of the students goes on a shooting spree. The nonlinear format gives each Suicide King a chance to shine while being interrogated by the other two or while reciting hard-hitting autobiographical poetry to the class in flashbacks. Berkeley Slam Team and Youth Speaks poets appear as special guests. June 28 and 29 at the Oakland Metro (630 3rd St., Oakland). OaklandMetro.org.
