Imelda May’s new album is called Mayhem, and its punny title sums up the energy and exuberance you can expect from this Dublin dynamo and her hard rockin’ trio. She borrows her template from the rockabilly insanity of the Sun Records era, but reinvents the genre by adding the big band swing of the Forties, some Fifties R&B, a hint of country music, and a tidal wave of surf guitar supplied by her husband, Darrell Higham. The rhythm section of Al Gare on stand-up bass and drumming maniac Steve Rushton lays a solid foundation for May’s powerful vocals. At The Independent (628 Divisidero, San Francisco) on Tuesday Aug. 9. 8 p.m., $20. TheIndependentSF.com.
