Spoken Word

When: Fri., Feb. 1, 8 p.m. 2008

One of the best vestiges of the spoken-word movement is the notion that poetry can -- and should -- be set to beats and performed in ensemble form. Hence the rise of spoken-word groups like iLL-Literacy, a quartet featuring Adriel Luis, DahlakBrathwaite, Nico Cary, and Ruby Veridiano-Ching. When they're not teaching workshops at high schools and universities (often in conjunction with San Francisco's Youth Speaks), the group tours internationally, opening for such popular hip-hop acts as Mos Def and AfrikaBambaataa. This year, they'll be working with a live band, which means less rote-style "poetry reading" and more "get-up-on-your-seat-and-bounce," Ruby assures. Catch them this Thursday, Feb. 1 at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall. 8 p.m., free. Ill-Literacy.com
