Il Divo

Rated NR 110 minutes 2009

Writer-director Paolo Sorrentino’s labyrinthine docudrama tries to uncover the real man behind the gray eminence of Giulio Andreotti, Italy’s “Black Pope,” “Sphinx,” “Hunchback,” and Senator for Life — the most powerful and mysterious man in the country. Actor Toni Servillo plays Christian Democrat politician Andreotti as a robotic little man, scurrying through marble corridors making life easier for industrialists, the church, and the mafia, while fending off investigations and tossing out epigrams like: “You live longer without needs.” Filmmaker Sorrentino takes full advantage of the settings for Godfather-style visuals revolving around Andreotti’s trial on corruption and murder charges. Worth a look for fans of history and crime (aren’t they more or less the same?) (110 min.).
