I Saw the Devil

Rated NR 141 minutes 2010

Director Kim Jee-woon (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) and screenwriter Park Hoon-jung paint themselves into a corner with this Grand-Guignol-style shockeroo about a maniacal serial killer (Choi Min-sik) and the equally spooky cop (Lee Byung-hyun) who hunts the killer down and lets him go repeatedly, as if for sport. If you can stay with it, the pic makes a show of ruminating on the concepts of vengeance and evil. But all that takes a back seat to the blood and gristle, and after two and a half hours actor Choi’s showboat —sicko performance wears a trifle thin. Costarring Jeon Gook-hwan. (141 min.)
