I Love You Phillip Morris

Rated R 100 min. 2010

Gay con man finds love in prison. In the hands of Jim Carrey that’s a high concept full of laughs – the uneasy kind rather than guffaws. Carrey and Ewan McGregor go all out, so to speak, in Glen Ficarra and John Requa’s archly comic character study based on the exploits of a real-life Texas con man and escape artist, and if the barbs about police mentality, penitentiary life, matter-of-fact homosexuality, Enron, diabetes, AIDS, and Johnny Mathis seem forced through at top speed – well, Steven Russell (played by Carrey in overdrive) led a pretty hectic life. One for the curiosity file. Screenplay adapted by Ficarra and Requa from the true-crime book by Steve McVicker. (102 min.)
