Its hard to review I Am Legend, in which Will Smith plays mankinds lone survivor fighting to cure the zombies that replaced his race, without comparing it to 1964s The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price and based on the same Richard Matheson novel, and 2002s 28 Days Later, in which Cillian Murphy plays one of the few survivors of a similar zombie-creating plague. Basically, I Am Legend mashes these two stories together, transforms the everyman leads into a superman (which is convenient if youre mankinds last hope), and then multiples the budget by, oh, almost twenty times. The result is a visually arresting, but ultimately lame rip-off of better movies (101 min., 2007).
