Rated R 99 minutes 2012

In Victorian London circa 1880, a young doctor named Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy) causes a sensation when he develops the world’s first “electric personal massager,” aka vibrator, as a means of alleviating his female patients’ “nagging thoughts.” But this intelligent comic drama has another dimension beyond the “tired finger” titillation. Granville becomes intrigued with his employer’s headstrong daughter, a feminist socialist named Charlotte (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who directs the doctor’s attention to the have-nots that can’t afford to mend their broken bones, let alone arrange a machine-inspired orgasm. Under the direction of Tanya Wexler, the screenplay – a true story embellished by writers Stephen Dyer, Jonah Lisa Dyer, and Howard Gensler – gets just the right combination of ribald-but-genteel laughs and social import, with sterling character support by Jonathan Pryce, Felicity Jones, Rupert Everett, and Sheridan Smith as various Londoners, high and low.
