Hyperdub, a British record label founded in 2004 by Steve Goodman — who’s also known by his musical moniker, Kode9 — is a premiere purveyor of innovative dance music. In addition to popularizing a range of styles such as dubstep, grime, and UK garage with roster stars like Flying Lotus, Laurel Halo, Zomby, and Hype Williams, Hyperdub was crucial to the explosion of Chicago’s footwork movement. A regional style of dancing before it was a musical subgenre, footwork was characterized by its frenetic energy and austere minimalism. Rashad was the figurehead of Teklife, a footwork crew that also included his longtime friends Taso and DJ Spinn. Also represented by Hyperdub, Spinn and Taso join Kode9 and Scratcha DVA to perform at Mighty (119 Utah St., San Francisco), for a tribute to the legacy of Rashad as well as his supportive label.
