Hubbard Street Dance Chicago

When: Jan. 18-20 2019

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is not just one of the most well-known dance companies in the current Cal Performances season, it’s one of the most celebrated in the entire country. The group of dancers will present a combination of old and new works — including three Bay Area premieres — across three days of performances. Perhaps most exciting is Saturday’s new works by Emma Portner, choreographer for pop stars like Justin Bieber and Teddy Forance, who might look familiar to fans of So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With the Stars. It’ll be accompanied by music via English producer Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange, as performed live by Grammy Award-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion. Friday and Sunday feature the same lineup, which certainly include intriguing works as well, such as a sensual number danced to the freak-folk sounds of Devendra Banhart. Jan. 18-20, times vary, $15-$88, 101 Zellerbach Hall, Berkeley,

Janelle Bitker

Price: $30-$68
