Howlin' Rain

When: Fri., Aug. 5, 9 p.m. 2011

In the three years since the release of its last full-length project, 2008'sMagnificent Fiend, Oakland's Howlin' Rain has hooked up with admirer Rick Rubin, who is helming the quintet's forthcoming untitled follow-up. While guitar-playing frontman Ethan Miller has the band's controls set for the heart of acid-rock grooving greatness, he also considers the band part of an ongoing, personal creative evolution -- one that dates back to his time as a member of Santa Cruz noise-rockers Comets on Fire. And while pre-production with Rubin has stretched over two years, Miller and his crew of riff-spewing maniacs have teased the masses via two EPs -- 2008'Wild Life and last year's The Good Life. So while fans debate whether the turning of the leaves will coincide with Howlin' Rain's long-awaited third long-player, Bay Area locals will undoubtedly be teased by the musical fruits of the Rubin/Howlin' Rain marriage at The Uptown Nightclub (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Friday, Aug. 5. 9 p.m., free.
