How to Lose Friends & Alienate People

Rated R 110 minutes 2008

It’s hard to imagine a worse adaptation of a great book than How to Lose Friends & Alienate People. In fact, it now seems more likely that the filmmakers behind this “comedy” did everything in their power to disregard author Toby Young’s memoir about his time at Vanity Fair, a scathing satire of our celebrity-obsessed culture. How did a book that featured a host of real-life celebrities and tyrants of the media biz garner only two cameos upon the leap to the big screen? Thandie Newton is great, but ... Brian Austin Green? Really? More confusing are the constant visual and musical references to a Fellini’s fairy tale about celebrity, La Dolce Vita, a comparison no one involved in this project should have courted (110 min.).
