A Nickelodeon movie in every sense, Hotel for Dogs is most remarkable for not featuring one joke that would appeal to anyone older than thirteen. The premise is cute: two orphans, ages 11 and 16, create the illusion of family with neighborhood friends by populating an abandoned hotel with dozens of stray dogs. The younger of the two, Bruce (Jake T. Austin), is also an inventor at heart; he creates some pretty nifty contraptions that turn the hotel into an amusement park for their panting wards. But the message about the value of family seems too obvious in a family movie, and not enough is offered up to make Hotel for Dogs stand out especially from the other dog-starring movies that have been recently released.
