Hot Dog Eating Contest

When: Sun., July 4, 12 p.m. 2010

How Independence Day got linked with frankfurter consumption is a question best left for an anthropologist. Come to think of it, a person in that field would no doubt have a field day at the Alameda County Fair (4501 Pleasanton Ave., Pleasanton). The three-week festival peaks on Sunday, July 4, when ten teams of four eaters will chow down on hot dogs to determine the countyƕs most famished, or gluttonous quartert. The showdown begins at high noon at the festival square, and offers prizes to the winners. Viewers, meanwhile, can always walk away and grab a corndog without the pressure of competition. $4-$10.
