Hot Club of San Francisco CD Release

When: Mon., May 18, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009

The Hot Club of San Francisco, led by ace guitaristPaul Mehling, has been playing gypsy jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt for almost two decades, always expanding the music in exciting new directions. Recently the group has been bringing a bit of classical music to the mix playing melodies by Claude Debussy, Francis Poulenc, and Heitor Villa-Lobos in its patented, high-energy style. It has also adapted Reinhardt's long lost "Messe," a Catholic mass he wrote to honor the Romany people, playing it with a quiet intensity that complements the original's spiritual tone. The current Hot Club also includes Grammy-winning violinist Evan Price; Jeff Magidson and Jason Vanderford on twin rhythm guitars; and bassist Clint Baker. They all bring plenty of fiery musicianship and lighthearted swing to everything they play. The Hot Club of San Francisco plays Monday, Nov. 17 at Yoshi's in San Francisco (1330 Fillmore St.). 8 & 10 p.m., $16, $10. Yoshis.com
