Hot Club of Cowtown

When: Tue., Dec. 15, 8 p.m. 2009

After a four-year break, the Hot Club of Cowtown returns with Wishful Thinking, which may be its best album yet. The trio’s stellar chops are still intact and it still manages to make three instruments sound like a big band. It continues to combine the best elements of Django’s gypsy jazz and Bob Wills swing into a bright, highly musical hybrid that’s all its own. Fiddler Alana James and guitarist Whit Smith have both shown amazing growth as singers and songwriters in the past few years, writing originals that sound just as catchy as any of the standards they cover. The Hot Club of Cowtown plays Tuesday, Dec. 15, at the Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley). 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50. TheFreight.org
