Documentarian Arthur Dong, who made the insightful, well researched Forbidden City, USA, performs a similar service for the mainstream US film industry and its depiction of Chinese Americans over the years - from inscrutable stereotypes to more realistic portrayals. Terrific talking-heads lineup: filmmakers Ang Lee, Wayne Wang, and Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift); writers David Henry Hwang and Amy Tan; and actors Nancy Kwan, Joan Chen, James Hong, Christopher Lee, B.D. Wong, and Lisa Lu. Dong also uncovered a rarity: The Curse of Quon Gwon, a Chinese-American silent produced in Oakland in 1916-17. A must-see for historically minded film fans (90 min.).
