Holiday Open House

When: Sat., Dec. 1, 12-4 p.m. 2007

Among the 400-plus publishers distributed by Berkeley's Small Press Distribution, some release only one book per year. Some of those books sell fewer than a hundred copies. Founded in 1969, Small Press Distribution sustains eclectic endeavors that we'd never see otherwise. Its annual Holiday Open House, held on Dec. 1 in its warehouse (1341 7th St., Berkeley), features the Poetry Trading Post: trade a poem or story of your own for a free book. Featured readers include Susan Gevirtz and Alameda poet Catherine Meng (sample lines: "While he sleeps, a thief's axe waits in the ice chest/alongside ground beef. Alongside ground beef/a thief's axe waits while he sleeps. A thief sleeps. ..." ). Noon; readings start at 2 p.m.
