Hold the Line Football Camp

When: Sat., June 28, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sun., June 29, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. 2008

It appears that the old "dumb jock" theory has been supplanted with a more enlightened vision of the "overachiever" athlete -- someone who values competition, team work, strategy, and mastery. Players like retired Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabar, New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush, and Washington Redskins tackle Lorenzo Alexander show that a sports mentality can easily be parlayed in the academic or business arena -- a point Alexander will make at this weekend's "Hold the Line" football camp. Open to 200 local youth on a first-come, first-serve basis, the camp will comprise two full-day clinics with drills, flag football, and punt, pass, and kick competition, and the chance to get feedback from professionals like former Cal Bears running back (and Oakland Tech alum) Marshawn Lynch. Saturday-Sunday, June 28-29, at Berkeley High School Football Field (1980 Allston Wy.). 9 a.m.-3 p.m., free for student athletes in grades 6-12. LorenzoAlexander.org
