High Tea on 420

Here’s an early nomination for the cleverest food and beverage event of the year: On Monday, Emeryville’s Commonwealth Micropub (3986 Adeline St.) will host its first annual “High Tea on 420” because — perhaps you’ve heard — April 20 is a day some folks like to smoke marijuana. But for this event the tea will be “high” strictly in the British sense, referring, as it does traditionally, to a hearty meal eaten with a good pot of tea. On hand for the festivities will be two Anglophile-friendly Oakland businesses: Steep Tea Co. will brew a selection of loose leaf teas, and The Pie Shop pop-up will supply all of the food: traditional British-style savory meat pies (plus a curried vegetable version), Yorkshire scones, and lemon curd. Meanwhile, the fact that the event will be held at Commonwealth means there will be plenty of cold beer on tap. All food and drink will be sold a la carte, but there will be sit-down table service as would befit a proper British tea service.
