High On Fire

When: Thu., Dec. 18, 9 p.m. 2008

If your idea of a good time includes witnessing a shirtless maniac coaxing brutally dirty sounds from his instrument; if your concept of "soothing" includes skull-pounding drumming and a gut-wrenching low rumble; if the above-mentioned is likely to help induce some ecstatic state of mind; then, undoubtedly, High on Fire is your band. To boot, the Oakland metal trio appears to be at the top of its game: the lineup finally solidified, its last album -- 2007's Death Is This Communion -- clearly its strongest effort to-date, and its members no longer have to dig ditches for a living. Buy them a beer and celebrate when they headline the GreatAmericanMusic Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco) on Thursday, Dec. 18. And don't miss openers Drunk Horse. 9 p.m., $16.
