When: Sat., Feb. 16, 8 p.m. 2008
Oh, how I hate making these decisions. But Cal Performances keeps scheduling an embarrassment of riches. If I choose JordiSavall'sHespèrion XXI and the vocalists of La CapellaReial de Catalunya rather than the Tokyo String Quartet, it's because the ensemble's program -- which combines the 15th-century music of Josquin des Prés and Juan del Enzina (among others) with the Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin literature of Hernando Colón (son of Christopher Columbus), IbnZamrak, and Andrés Bernáldez -- is one you're unlikely to encounter again in this lifetime. Besides, the artistry of Savall's wife, soprano Montserrat Figueras, is worth standing in the rain for. At the First Congregational Church (2345 Channing Way, Berkeley) on Saturday, Feb. 16. 8 p.m., $52. CalPerfomrances.org or 415-392-4400.
