Rated R 100 minutes 2011

Lonely kid gets mentored by stoner freak squatter. Prepare to laugh. Director Spencer Susser, with help from co-writer and Blue-Tongue Films stablemate David Michôd (Animal Kingdom), turns a tearful situation inside out with the story of eleven-year-old T.J. (Devin Brochu) and his new live-in life coach Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who helps the kid get over the death of his mother, the disintegration of his family, and their smog-coated environs, by lighting up a bong and snarfing mashed potatoes. None of the rest of the characters – Natalie Portman as T.J.’s other adult friend, Rainn Wilson as his grief-paralyzed dad, Brendan Hill as the bully – matters very much, although Piper Laurie excels as T.J.’s pixelated grandma. Gordon-Levitt, an amiably slack presence in films like Inception, gives his career a major jolt as foul-mouthed, tattooed Hesher, a 21st-century version of the tramp from Jean Renoir’s Boudu Saved from Drowning.
