Rated PG-13 2010

Clint Eastwood tries to make a meaningful, emotionally honest drama about a clutch of ponderous, much-abused, linked subjects: mortality, destiny, life after death, the interconnectedness of human beings, and so on. Surprisingly, he succeeds. With the help of screenwriter Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Damned United, The Queen) and a thoughtful cast headed by Matt Damon, Cécile de France, and young English twins George and Frankie McLaren, director Eastwood wisely skirts the Babel/Grand Canyon/Magnolia trap and lets his actors, not the mystical-phenomenal otherworldiness of it all, carry the load. The best scenes in this international project -- shot mostly at England’s Pinewood Studios but also in Paris, Hawaii, and San Francisco -- are among the best work Eastwood has ever done, touchy-feely or no. Also with Bryce Dallas Howard, Thierry Neuvic, and Jay Mohr. (129 min.)
