Hello-O-Ween 2009

When: Sat., Oct. 31, 9 p.m. 2009

At its genesis, the Hell-O-Ween 2009Costume Ball featured EastBay metal band Mystic Knights of the Cobra -- a weird, screamy, highly imaginative rock outfit whose greatest hit was a sleek, metallic track called "Text Messaging Slut." Then Mystic Knight's guitarist Paul Dominguez drowned in the RussianRiver, and the band went into mourning. But Hell-o-Ween must go on. On Saturday, Oct. 31, the other bands on the lineup -- namely, a Dead Boys tribute group called the Undead Boys and an Oakland-based jug band, theeHobo Gobbelins -- will memorialize their friend with classic American punk and old-timey beer songs. Held at the Uptown Nightclub (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), Hell-O-Weenstarts at 9 p.m. and costs $10 (UptownNightClub.com). If you can't make it out that early, look for the Gobbelins a little closer to witching hour at an after-hours purgatory called OtherWorld ($15). There they'll be accompanied by Zeph and Azeem, Lateef the Truthspeaker, and an impressive lineup of dubstep and glitch DJs. That's an odd change in scene for the Gobbelins, but given the shadowy nature of the venue, they should fit right in
