Rated NR 102 minutes 2010

Francis (played by director Xavier Dolan) and Marie (Monia Chokri), a pair of metrosexual urban sophisticates from Montreal, find themselves angling for the same blond boy, Nicolas (Niels Schneider), with limited success. Once again as in his trying film I Killed My Mother, filmmaker Dolan dominates most of the action. His self-involved character is interesting enough, but Chokri’s Marie, a lonely romantic, outshines him in every scene. What is more puzzling is the filmmaker’s use of extraneous characters (ex-lovers of the principals) as a sort of Greek chorus — they come across as rookie actors auditioning for the big part. Other complaints: too many musical interludes, too much posing, and generally not enough meat in the sandwich. (95 min.)
