Haywire

Rated R 92 minutes 2012

Superior genre pic stars Women’s Mixed Martial Arts champ Gina Carano as an international rent-a-killer trying to find out which governmental (or private) spy org sold her out in Barcelona. The deft hand of director Steven Soderbergh is everywhere apparent, from the ultra-brisk exposition to David Holmes’ retro Seventies-style music track. Writer Lem Dobbs’ ice-cold dialogue isn’t too shabby either. Carano may seem at first like a standard-issue female avenger but she compares more closely to a female Chuck Norris — entirely convincing as an ex-Marine unaccustomed to connecting the dots, but learning in a hurry. Among those on her hit list: Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Mathieu Kassovitz, and old hand Bill Paxton as her father. Begs for a sequel. (92 min.)
