The city of Hayward isn’t exactly known for taking a stand on matters outside its city limits, but the City Council has decided that Proposition 8, the November initiative that would eliminate gay marriage, is one worth of its attention. And councilmembers delivered a big fat no last week, almost unanimously voting to oppose the measure. The only dissenter was councilwoman Anna May, and even she hates the proposition. She just didn’t feel comfortable taking a stand on something that didn’t directly come before the council. Morality and civic caution, just what we want in a city council. Hayward did itself proud all around last week.
