The sixth, seemingly stepchild installment of J.K. Rowlings outlandishly popular juvie-wizard franchise (its release was rescheduled) finds adolescent Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) back at Hogwarts, using the mysterious, eponymous princes potion book to help his friends get dates and, in his spare time, fending off the omnipresent evil doings. Direction (by second-timer David Yates), art direction (Andrew Ackland-Snow), and character cast Michael Gambon, Emma Watson, Jim Broadbent, David Thewlis, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane are up to the usual high standards, but naturally the Dark Side has all the fun: Alan Rickman, Tom Felton, Helena Bonham Carter, Timothy Spall, and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin. Despite several dazzling visual set pieces, its hard to escape the notion that some of the magic has gone out of this series. Screenplay adaptation by Potter regular Steve Kloves (153 min.).
