Hans York

When: Thu., July 23, 8 p.m. 2009

Hans York was once the prime mover in the Brazilian-flavored German world music outfit MokaEfti, and a well-known session player, but he left his homeland to move to Seattle and pursue his own singular songwriting muse. York's music blends jazz, folk, and classical European styles, marked by intense guitar work, usually in open tunings, full of melodic single note runs, striking overtones, and intricate picking. On his latest album, Young Amelia, York's poignant melodies and mellow vocals are put in service of songs that gently explore the hidden recesses of an aching heart with rare insight. While York's songs tend to dwell on life's more distressing moments, his shimmering guitar work and vocal sincerity has a way of shining light on even the darkest moments. On Friday, July 25 at the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley). 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50. TheFreight.org
