Rated NR 2011

Not the first junior spy adventure, but one of the best. Taciturn teenager Hanna (Saoirse Ronan in a defining performance) has been raised in a remote European forest by her father (Eric Bana) to be the ultimate “rogue asset,” and she certainly drives the other spooks bonkers — especially CIA harpy Cate Blanchett, who sends killers to kill her. But she mostly kills them. It would all be pretty silly without filmmaker Joe Wright’s Grimm-ish fairytale mood, captured in the snowy wilderness of Finland, the Moroccan desert, and in a topsy-turvy distressed children’s theme park in Berlin. Ronan pulls it off as if she were born to it, with nifty character playing by Tom Hollander and Jessica Barden. Screenplay by Seth Lochhead and David Farr, from Lochhead’s story. Imaginative direction by Wright (The Soloist, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice), who only borrows what is strictly necessary from the films of Tom Tykwer. (111 min.)
