Handcrafted & Special Interest Car Show

When: Sat., Sept. 12, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sun., Sept. 13, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 2009

Many vintage automobile buffs are sticklers for details. They fetishize not only the car in its totality, but each individual component: the auto tranny, the wheels, the hubcaps -- even the way sunlight oils the chrome as it tools down Sunset Boulevard. Anyone who appreciates such things will feel right at home at this weekend's 27th annual handcrafted automobile show, presented by the Northern California Kit Car Club. Held at the Hilton Hotel in Concord (1970 Diamond Blvd.), the show will feature a variety of vehicles cobbled together outside a manufacturing plant, sometimes with mechanical elements (e.g., an engine or transmission) scavenged from production cars and recast with an original body design. This year's lineup includes a Porsche Speedster, a Ferrari 250 GTO, a few high-octane Cobra spinoffs, and several iterations of the Mercedes 500 K. Videos of the 2008 event in San Leandro show a dazzling combination of classic models and futuristic designs. It's a show geared for car enthusiasts and mechanical engineers, but there's enough visual stimuli for onlookers. Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 12 & 13, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., free for spectators; $25 for participants. Registration fees benefit the Community Youth Center of Concord. NCKCC.com
