Hamlet: Blood in the Brain

When: Mon., July 26, 7:30 p.m. 2010

Hamlet is said to be one of the most adapted works of all time, but it's safe to assume you've never seen Shakespeare's classic quite like this. In Naomi Iizuka's version, the tragic hero is a young parolee and his kingdom is a late-Eighties Oakland ravaged by drugs and violence. Hamlet: Blood in the Brain opened to critical acclaim when it was first performed by Cal Shakes in 2004, and on Monday, July 26, students from Oakland Technical High School reproduce it for one night only at Bruns Amphitheater (100 California Shakespeare Way, Orinda), before they head to Scotland to perform at the prestigious Fringe Festival. The show will be followed by a Q&A with cast members from both the original run and the Oakland Tech crew. 7:30 p.m., free. 510-548-9666 or CalShakes.org--
