A lot of people didn’t quite know what to make of HAIM when its debut record, Days Are Gone, blew up. On one hand, the three sisters, who had at one point backed their parents’ cover band, play the kind of pop music that begs for repeat listens. But some wrote it off as novelty. The blend of Michael Jackson pop with Shania Twain ease and Fleetwood Mac passion seemed a little too on the nose. But long-awaited follow-up Something to Tell You showed that with a little more studio gloss, HAIM clearly has staying power. As much as the trio mined light-pop of yesteryear, the songs are about as earnest as you can get in a three-minute tune.
