This musical documentary on a North American tour by Roma (aka Gypsy) musicians may resemble Buena Vista Social Club a little too closely, but there's no denying the earthy appeal of the five bands from four European countries and their joyous, colorful, whirling, keening sounds especially the two from Romania, Taraf de Haïdouks and Fanfare Ciocarlia. Bonus points for the Old Country travelogue footage in the muddy villages of the Roma heartland, shot by documentarian extraordinaire Albert Maysles. Use this doc as a stepping stone to the harder stuff by filmmakers Tony Gatlif, Emir Kusturica, et al. Written, produced, and directed by Jasmine Dellal, who studied at UC Berkeley with Marlon Riggs.
