Guided Growth

When: Sept. 17-Nov. 6 2010

Sculptor Misako Inaoka, the creator of Johansson Projects' trademark moss ceiling, is back with a menagerie of imaginary animals that suggest the progeny of animal/animal or animal/machine miscegenation; exercise caution when beaming around, teleporters! The small sculptures, painted black or silver, stand or walk on plinths that jut from the wall like miniature fashion runways ("Mutant Frog," "Snail Ladder," "Deer Workers," "VW/Whale Tanker," "Melting Jeep," "Anemone Dozer," "Walker Drift," "Winged Windmill Giraffe," and "Deer-Horse Monocycle"). Some are even animated by motors and sensors or wind-up toy mechanisms. Larger works are elaborated versions of commercially available taxidermy armatures: atrophied trophies. Both alarming and amusing, these transgressive hybrids embody our anxieties (despite the show's title) about events spiraling out of our control. Guided Growth runs through November 6 at Johansson Projects (2300 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). 510-444-9140 or
