Grupo Falso Baiano

When: Wed., Aug. 3, 8 p.m. 2011

Grupo Falso Baiano may be the only choro band in North America. Choro is one of Brazil's first styles of pop music and, like all Brazilian music, it blends African rhythm and European melodies for its own powerful, lilting sound. The acoustic quintet has been playing its own take on choro since 2003, and while staying true to the music's roots, these musicians also drop a bit of samba and jazz into the mix. Grupo Falso Baiano will be celebrating the release of its second album, Simplicidade: Live At Yoshi's, with a set that presents a good sample of its powerful live sound. At Yoshi's (510 Embracadero, Oakland) on Wednesday, Aug. 3. 8 p.m., $
