The Oakland art rock power duo Grex concludes a tour celebrating a decade of coruscating music-making as part of a creatively charged triple bill at The Uptown. Featuring Karl A.D. Evangelsta on guitar and vocals and M. Rei Scampavia Evangelista on keyboards and vocals, Grex creates spacious but roiling soundscapes marked by burrowing improvisation, incantatory melodic hooks, and distortion-laden textures. Sometimes compared to Skeleton Crew and Deerhoof, the duo has honed a deeply intuitive connection that opens doors to both ominous drones and ecstatic flights. Featuring Motoko Honda on toy piano and Theo Padouvas on trumpet, the talent-laden improv sextet Hare and Arrow also performs scores for stop-motion films by Sung Kim (who plays invented instruments and automata). Jeweled Snakes, a self-described “chopped and screwed synth punk” duo, round out the program.
