Gretchen Peters

When: Tue., Aug. 13, 8 p.m. 2019

For more than 20 years, Gretchen Peters has been writing country hits for a diverse cross section of Nashville stars, as well as artists like Bonnie Raitt, The Neville Brothers, Neal Diamond, and Etta James. Although she’s a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and been twice nominated for a Best Country Song Grammy, Peters resides a bit out of the mainstream, writing songs that deal with life’s more difficult moments with a combination of grief and optimism. She’s not afraid to call herself a feminist, or write songs that explore the lives of women and girls facing up to the realities of present day American life. As she’s gotten older, the subject of age pops up frequently in her songs, a subject she illuminates with her usual compassionate clarity. Her new album, Dancing with the Beast, is one of her best, taking on dysfunctional relationships, depression and prostitution
