Greil Marcus

When: Thu., March 14, 6 p.m. 2013

In 1978, famed rock critic and current UC Berkeley lecturer Greil Marcus asked twenty of his fellow music writers the following question: If you found yourself stranded on a desert island, what one rock and roll album would you choose to take with you? From Lester Bangs’ ode to Van Morisson’s Astral Weeks to Robert Christeau’s musings on the New York Dolls’ self-titled debut, the twenty essays that resulted were compiled in Stranded: Rock and Roll for a Desert Island, which also included an indulgent list of Marcus’ personal recommendations for any desert-island soundtrack. On Thursday, Mar. 14, join Marcus at Stranded (6436 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) — the name, by the way, is pure and perfect coincidence — for a special look back at the 25-year-old rock-and-roll time capsule. 6 p.m., free.
