Greenberg

Rated R 107 min. 2010

Ben Stiller, safely back in Schmuckville, plays Roger Greenberg, a fortyish loser who house-sits his successful brother’s Beverly Hills home but can’t enjoy it, not even when a pliant personal assistant named Florence (played by Greta Gerwig from Baghead) is part of the deal. Welcome to another Noah Baumbach neurotic rhapsody. Writer-director Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding) staffs Roger’s season in hell with well-intentioned friends and ex-friends (Rhys Ifans, co-writer Jenniffer Jason Leigh, Mark Duplass), but it’s the title character’s pathetic gropings with the sweetly docile Florence that strikes the strongest chord – among the many things Roger doesn’t know how to do is relax and get laid. Alternately hilarious and embarrassing, with both Baumbach and Stiller at the top his respective game (107 min.).
