Green Lantern 3D

Rated NR 2011

Unlike most comic book superhero extravaganzas, this adaptation of the DC Comics spacemen-recruit-brave-human franchise actually makes effective use of 3-D, color (green, mostly), and special effects. Most of that happens off-world. The earthbound predicaments of test-pilot-turned-godlike-being Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), his headstrong girlfriend Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), and vengeful nerd scientist Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) are less fun to watch, mostly because Reynolds and Lively are truly terrible actors. The dialogue, by four writers riffing on the DC characters, doesn’t help. Better to fixate on the interstellar eye candy. Directed half-brilliantly by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale). Also with Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins. (105 min.)
