Great Integration: A Chamber Hip-Hop Opera on the Night of 2012 Apocalypse

When: Fri., Dec. 21, 10 p.m. 2012

The concept behind JooWan Kim's Great Integration is intriguing, but the show itself is not entirely new. Kim's "hip-hop chamber opera," as performed by his Ensemble MikNawooj, has been showing around the Bay Area for years, but it seems fitting that he's choosing to run it on Friday, Dec. 21, with an addendum to the original title: "a chamber hip-hop opera on the night of the apocalypse." Most of the shows taking place that night with some reference to the "end of the world" or "doomsday" have an ironic slant to them, and indeed, it's unlikely Kim actually thinks the apocalypse will happen. But the date's selection is symbolic, and does seem to add more gravity to the already-serious themes in his show: alternative mythologies, corruption, morality, the creation and dissolution of the universe. What's more, for this show at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley), the Ensemble MikNawooj is trading its usual octet for a thirteen-piece chamber orchestra. Bay Area underground hip-hop acts The Attik & Rico Pabón will also perform. 8 p.m., $15.
