Rock & Pop

Grand Archives

When: Tue., Sept. 22, 9 p.m. 2009

If proof was ever needed that a person's environment casts its sway over the creative process, look no further than Mat Brooke of Grand Archives. Two albums into leaving Band of Horses and forming his new band, Brooke has carved out a style of gauzy chamber-pop that's not unlike the oft overcast weather of his Pacific Northwest environs -- opaque cloud cover  periodically broken by the sunshine -- in this case rays of string arrangements and ethereal harmonies. With the new album Keep in Mind Frankenstein, Brooke and his crew serves up the expected stew of slo-core tinged by delicate touches of steel guitar and ghostly vocals that give the songs a far more delectable twang than say the languid approach of peers Beach House. This auditory slice of a typical Seattle forecast moves in on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $12.
