Gov't Mule

When: Sat., Oct. 30, 8 p.m. 2010

Spawned from famous Georgia outfit The Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule is a jam band with all the roots-rock influences, and none of the wankery. Its core members -- guitarist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, and the late bassist Allen Woody -- were all old-time southern rockers with the long hair and sleeve tattoos to prove it . Their group quickly rose from side-project beginnings to become a very capable power-rock trio. Woody was later replaced by Andy Hess, and the addition of keyboardist Danny Louis helped fill out the band's sound.Gov't Mule is particularly famous for its Halloween shows, during which it performs faithful tributes to predecessors like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones. Apparently, the band members have listened to their predecessors carefully enough to memorize every detail of every classic rock album in the pantheon. If asked, they could replicate Houses of the Holy down to the minutiae of Jimmy Page's guitar solos -- in fact they tried it once, during a sold-out Halloween homage a couple years ago. This year, Gov't Mule does Halloween at The Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Saturday, Oct. 30. 8 p.m. $35 APEConcerts.com
