Gordon H. Chang

When: Sat., May 25, 2-4 p.m. 2019

Many Californians don’t give much thought to the Chinese workers who built the railroads, but history would tell a much different story without their efforts. In Ghosts of Gold Mountain: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad, Stanford history professor Gordon H. Chang relies on unprecedented research to explore the lives of workers who came by the thousands to dynamite tunnels through the Sierra Nevada and lay track through the Utah desert. Chang’s talk will be preceded by chef David Soohoo’s presentation on the diet of the Chinese railroad builders.
