Rated NR 95 minutes 2017

As the 1992 Rodney King riots begin in the streets of Los Angeles, a pair of scruffy but entrepreneurial Korean-American brothers, joined by an African-American teenage girl from the neighborhood, have to decide whether their women’s shoe store in South Central is worth defending. This bracing slice of urban life is actor-turned filmmaker Justin Chon’s second film as a director, with standout performances by Chon, David So, and Simone Baker. It’s a sure-footed portrait of the social ferment of its time and place. Striking black-and-white cinematography by Ante Cheng and fittingly antsy music score by Roger Suen, too. Costarring Curtiss Cook Jr. and Ben Munoz (94 min., 2017, not rated)
