This quiet, closely observed border crossing drama details the relationship between a lonely, bitter old Southerner named William (played by former Elvis Presley pal Red West) and Solo, the West African immigrant taxi driver (newcomer Souléyman Sy Savané) who takes him around Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Shades of a 21st-century Driving Miss Daisy, but director Ramin Bahrani, who wrote the screenplay with Bahareh Azimi, earns the films accumulated pathos honestly. Just because we can see the tears coming doesnt automatically make them fraudulent. Acting kudos to young Diana Franco Galindo as Solos stepdaughter, Alex (91 min.).
